Our Story
The Heart Behind Our Mission…
For more than three decades, The Franciscan Center has been dedicated to serving individuals and families throughout Fort Wayne with compassion, dignity, and hope. Founded in 1989 by the late Sally Ley and Jean Kelly, the organization began as a homeless shelter and sack lunch program focused on meeting immediate community needs. Inspired by the teachings and values of St. Francis of Assisi, the Center was established by members of the St. Charles Fraternity with a vision of serving others through faith, kindness, and action.
Over the years, that vision has continued to evolve. As the needs of the community have changed, so too have the programs and services offered by The Franciscan Center. Today, the organization provides a wide range of outreach initiatives, food assistance programs, volunteer opportunities, community events, and charitable services designed to create meaningful impact throughout the region.
While a dedicated staff oversees the day-to-day operations of the organization, the true strength of The Franciscan Center comes from the remarkable community that supports its mission. Each year, more than 4,300 volunteers contribute over 9,000 hours of service, helping deliver programs, organize events, distribute resources, and support outreach efforts that touch countless lives. Volunteers range in age from young children to senior citizens, united by a shared commitment to helping neighbors in need and creating positive change throughout the community.
Their generosity, compassion, and willingness to serve make it possible for The Franciscan Center to continue expanding its reach and fulfilling its mission year after year.
